The Collaborative Problem Solving parenting approach, developed by the Think:Kids program in Massachusetts General Hospital, provides parents with concrete tools to better understand and parent their children (ages 3-18) in the face of ordinary challenges – e.g., getting to school, screen time, homework, bedtime – and more serious challenges. It’s based on the understanding that many kids lack the skill, not the will, to behave well – specifically skills related to frustration tolerance, flexibility and problem solving. Unlike traditional models of discipline, the CPS approach avoids the use of power, control and motivators and instead helps parents to:

PARENT COACHING
Individual/couples coaching sessions are tailored to the unique needs of the parents, children and family, and include learning the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) philosophy and approach, assistance with the assessment of the child's lagging skills and problems to be solved, preparation for CPS conversations, opportunities to practice CPS conversations using role-play, and feedback on CPS implementation efforts.
Coaching enhances the ability of parents to apply the CPS approach more deeply, reflectively, frequently, and consistently than attempting to implement CPS alone. The likelihood of using new learning rises exponentially when guided by a coach, in part because the coaching relationship fosters greater commitment and accountability. To get a sense of how significant coaching can be to the implementation of newly learned content, see outcomes in Table 1 below comparing the effectiveness of coaching to theory and discussion, demonstration, and practice and feedback.
Price: $110/hour (a sliding scale is available for those with financial need).
Location: Brookline office, online through Skype, or in client's home (depending upon location, an additional travel fee may apply)
